Amber has been crocheting since she was 8 years old. At 11, her grandma taught her to read patterns and make doilies. She hasn’t put her hook down since. Her favorite items to crochet are jewelry and amigurumi toys for her children. Her favorite yarn is cotton. Recently, she discovered a passion for creating crocheted garments. When she isn’t crocheting, she is caring for her two children, hanging out with her husband, and teaching English as a Second Language to international university students. You can find Amber’s patterns on her Ravelry.

Half-double crochet is a versatile stitch that gets used in so many patterns. The following crochet stitch tutorial will give you a few new ways to use the stitch to give some texture and individuality to your pieces. This technique is called third-loop half-double crochet (3L hdc). It creates a great ribbing texture by pushing the front and back loops of each hdc stitch (that you would traditionally crochet into) forward on your project so that they create a braided look. There are several ways to create beautiful texture with 3L hdc. A few are described below.
Step 1:
Chain desired number +2. Hdc in 3rd chain from hook and each across.
Step 2:
Ch 2, turn. Hdc in the 3L of each stitch across. The third loop is in front of and below the front loop of the stitch.
When working into the 3L, you are working on the back (wrong side) of your work.
You can turn the work over and notice that the front and back loops of the row below have been pushed forward and create a braided look.
Step 3:
Ch 2, turn. Hdc in the back loop of each stitch across. Now you are working on the front (right side) of your work. When working on the front, you will notice that the 3rd loop and the front loop create a similar braided look.
Step 4:
Continue repeating steps 3 and 4 until you have achieved your desired length.
This shows you what the back (wrong side) of your work looks like.
HDC 3L Alternatives.
Alternative 1: Hdc in the 3L of each row. This will give the right and wrong sides of your piece the same look.
Alternative 2: Alternate rows of hdc and sc. Sc into the 3L of each hdc. When crocheting your hdc row, crochet over both loops of sc.
There are many ways to make beautiful ribbed or braided work. Experiment with your rows and the loops that you crochet into. I hope you enjoyed learning about crocheting into the 3rd loop of half-double crochet stitches.
