Quilling with Larissa Zasadna

We have an amazing interview with Larissa of Larissa Zasadna who will tell you how she got started with quilling, some of her inspiration for her artwork and much more! How did you start Larissa Zasadna?

When my works began to attract more and more attention, those interested in my country could buy them, having previously contacted me by phone. But when the first requests from abroad appeared, the question arose about organizing a convenient, fast and simple way of working with clients. This is how the idea of opening a Larissa Zasadna store came about.

What gave you the idea/inspiration?

I have a lot of sources of inspiration :) I find them in everything that surrounds me. After all, what is inspiration? Inspiration is a state of your soul where you want to do a lot. Usually there are so many ideas in my head that sometimes I can't start doing anything, just because I just simply can't choose one of them. The most significant source of inspiration for me is travel, especially to the mountains or walks in different countries to remote sparsely populated areas in order to get to know the country. I really love to observe nature, I love the sound of the surf, sunsets and sunrises, birdsong, etc. For me, there is no bad weather, I always see only positive sides in any situation. Another source of inspiration is loved ones (children, husband), as well as the creativity of successful people.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I was born in the south of Ukraine. Now I live in the wonderful city of Odessa on the Black Sea coast. Since childhood, I really loved to draw, make figures from plasticine, crochet and knit, in general, do everything with my own hands. I want to note that our whole family is creative. I have an economic education. I am a mother of two wonderful children and a grandmother to two adorable granddaughters. I love sports, music, travel, painting, etc. All my time I work at home on my projects. Love for the exact sciences at school, this is mathematics and chemistry, still affects my work. I am very scrupulous about every job. Everything should be very precise, neat and correct in shape. It is very difficult for me to create a design, for example, for Pablo Picasso, so lately, I have been making deviations from the forms we are used to in the direction of abstraction.

How long has Larissa Zasadna been around?

I opened my store immediately after working with a client from Bali, Indonesia. Then I ordered several works for printing on women's underwear. It was May 2015. Soon we will be 5 years old :)

What is Larissa Zasadna all about?

Larissa Zasadna offers a wide selection of handmade products for any occasion, be it a birthday, wedding, anniversary or to decorate your home, as well as online tutorials for those wishing to try their hand at quilling. I use only high quality paper from European countries, these are Germany, Italy and France. Framing is IKEA, Sweden.

How did you get started quilling?

I got acquainted with the quilling technique by chance when I was taking courses "Interior design". At one of the lessons, we were given the task of making a voluminous collage. Then for the first time on the Internet I saw these extraordinary paintings and was amazed by their beauty. I started trying, it was very exciting. I experimented with paper of different weights, I learned about the amazing properties of paper, I realized that it can be different based on which side to approach it. I cut the strips by hand using an iron ruler and a utility knife on a special rug. I mainly use 200-300 g / m2 high density paper. I did some free master classes for beginners, where I showed you how to make a Valentine card, strawberries, leaves and flowers. They are available on my website in Russian.

How do you choose the pieces you create?

Even before my store appeared, I approached this choice philosophically. For example, in one of my works I wanted to convey the power of human love and kindness. So the picture was born: "Love works wonders", which shows the power of love, the power of a loving heart, capable of melting the ice, cold, indifference in a person's soul, and those who have lost faith look at the world with different eyes. The next work, "The Four Elements", is based on the real story of a woman from the United States who really wanted a baby, but could not get pregnant for a very long time. She was about to do artificial insemination, went to see a doctor, and on the day appointed for such a procedure, it turned out that she was pregnant. This extraordinary story shocked me. Now this wonderful child is 6 years old. His name is Aiden. Now I listen more to the wishes of clients. I do works that can be made available to everyone. Do not forget that for each of these works there is a huge painstaking work, so it cannot be cheap.

What has inspired you to create different quilling art?

I am driven by interest. It is worth picking up a pencil and you can’t stop me. This feeling applies to how you feel when hiking in the mountains. You are alwasys interested in the question: “What is there behind that mountain?”

What is your favorite type of quilling art to create?

Quilling has several directions. At first, I was doing regular quilling. This is the creation of voluminous flower arrangements, birds, cups, vases, etc. At that time, I did not know about the existence of graphic quilling yet. I got acquainted with this direction in 2011. This direction is also called paper painted, it opens up your possibilities in expressing ideas and thoughts much wider. This is my favorite direction.

What advice would you give women entrepreneurs to encourage them?

Many people ask me: Where to start? Look at my works, can they be sold? What is the cost? I am afraid and suddenly it will not work…In this case, I advise, first of all, not to be afraid, but to try. It is better to try once than not to try at all and regret it. As you work, you gain experience, you can adjust your prices and feel out the buyer. It is very difficult to predict something in advance, everything is learned only in work, everything is individual. Be sure to do what you like, otherwise your store will turn into a daily routine that will weigh on you. You need to constantly work on your assortment, customer tastes change and you also must take this into account.

What did you wish you knew at the beginning of your journey?

At the beginning of my journey, I lacked flexibility, that is, before I basically did great things, and for those who lost faith, to look at the world with different eyes, difficult and labor - intensive work, and for a successful business you need to be more diverse…Now in my store Larissa Zasadna you can find both large complex works and small thematic ones: sports, music, coffee, art, etc.

What is your dream for Larissa Zasadna to be (where do you see Larissa Zasadna in 5+ years)?

Now I don't think about it yet. I just enjoy my creativity every day (and night :))

Is there anything you would like to talk about that we did not ask about?

I would like to tell you about my projects. I made several logos for American companies, design postcards for supermarket chains and businesses, design for a charity event in New York, design for a cafe in Hawaii. Now a project for decorating a lounge bar is ready, but due to Covid19 it is still on pause. A very interesting topic of illustrations for children's literature, I hope someday I will receive such an order.

Как возникла идея открытия вашего магазина Larissa Zasadna?

Когда мои работы стали привлекать все больше внимания, желающие в моей стране могли купить их, предварительно связавшись со мной по телефону. Но когда появились первые запросы из-за рубежа, то стал вопрос об организации удобного, быстрого и простого способа работы с клиентами. Так и возникла идея открытия магазина Larissa Zasadna.

Что вас вдохновляет?

У меня очень много источников вдохновения :) Я нахожу их во всем, что меня окружает. Ведь что такое вдохновение? Вдохновение - это такое состояние вашей души, когда вам хочется многое сделать. Обычно в моей голове так много идей, что иногда я ничего не могу начать делать, только потому, что просто напросто не могу выбрать одну из них. Самым значимым для меня источником вдохновения являются путешествия, особенно в горы или прогулки в разных странах по отдаленым малонаселенным пунктам с целью ознакомления со страной. Я очень люблю наблюдать за природой, люблю шум прибоя, закаты и рассветы, пение птиц и т.д. Для меня не существует плохой погоды, я всегда в любой ситуации вижу только положительные стороны. Еще одним из источников вдохновения являются любимые люди (дети, муж), а также творчество успешных людей.

Расскажите немного о себе.

Я родилась на юге Украины. Сейчас проживаю в замечательном городе Одесса на побережье Чёрного моря. С детства я очень любила рисовать, делать фигурки из пластелина, вязать крючком и на спицах, в общем делать все своими руками. Хочу заметить, что у нас вся семья творческая. У меня экономическое образование. Я мать двоих замечательных детей и бабушка для двух очаровательных внучек. Люблю спорт, музыку, путешествия, рисование и т.д. Все свое время я работаю дома над своими проэктами. Любовь к точным наукам в школе, это математика и химия, до сих пор сказывается на моем творчестве. Я очень щепетильно отношусь к каждой работе. Все должно быть очень точно, аккуратно и правильных форм. Мне очень сложно создать дизайн, как например у Пабло Пикассо, поэтому в последнее время, я делаю отступления от привычных нам форм в сторону абстракции.

Как долго существует Larissa Zasadna?

Я открыла свой магазин сразу же после работы с клиентом из Бали, Индонезия. Тогда мне заказал несколько работ для печати на женском нижнем белье. Это был май, 2015. Скоро нам исполнится 5 лет :)

Что предлагает Larissa Zasadna?

Larissa Zasadna предлагает широкий выбор товаров ручной работы к любому событию, будь-то день рождение, свадьба, годовщина или для украшения своего дома, а также онлайн учебники для желающих попробовать свои силы в технике квиллинг. Я использую только качественную бумагу европейских стран, это Германия, Италия и Франция. Обрамление - это IKEA, Швеция.

Как вы начали заниматся квиллингом?

С техникой квиллинг я познакомилась случайно, когда проходила курсы "Дизайн интерьера". На одном из занятий нам дали задание сделать обьемный коллаж. Тогда впервые в интернете я увидела эти необыкновенные картины и была потрясена их красотой. Я стала пробовать, это было очень увлекательно. Я экспериментировала с бумагой разной плотности, я узнала об удивительных свойствах бумаги, я поняла, что она может быть разной исходя их того, с какой стороны к ней подойти. Я нарезаю полосы вручную с помощью железной линейки и канцелярского ножа на специальном коврике. В основном я использую бумагу высокой плотности 200-300 гр/м2. Я сделала несколько бесплатных мастер классов для начинающих, где показала как сделать Валентинку, клубнику, листья и цветы. Они доступны на моем сайте на русском языке.

Как вы выбираете дизайн будущей работы?

Еще до появления моего магазина я подходила к этому выбору философски. Например, в одной из работ мне захотелось передать силу человеческой любви и доброты. Так родилась картина: "Любовь творит чудеса", где показана сила любви, сила любящего сердца, способного растопить лед, холод, равнодушие в душе человека, а утратившим веру взглянуть на мир другими глазами. Следующая работа: "Четыре стихии", основана на реальной истории женщины из США, которая очень хотела ребенка, но очень долго не могла забеременеть. Она уже собралась делать искусственное оплодотворение, сходила на прием к доктору, и в назначенный для такой процедуры день оказалось, что она беременна. Меня потрясла эта необыкновенная история. Сейчас этому чудесному ребенку 6 лет. Зовут его Aiden. Сейчас я больше прислушиваюсь к желанию клиентов. Делаю работы, которые могут быть доступны для каждого желающего. Не стоит забывать, что за каждой из таких работ стоит огромный кропотливый труд, поэтому это не может стоить дешево.

Что вдохновляет вас на создание разных quilling art?

Мною движет интерес. Стоит взять в руки карандаш и меня уже не остановить. Это чувство применимо к тому, что вы чувствуете в походе по горам. Вас всегда интересует ворпос: " А что же там за той горой?"

Какой вид quilling art вам нравится больше всего?

Квиллинг имеет несколько направлений. В первое время я занималась обычным квиллингом. Это создание обьемных цветочных композиций, птиц, чашек, ваз и т.д. Тогда я еще не знала о существовании графического квиллинга. С этим направлением я познакомилась в 2011. Это направление еще называют бумажной живописью, оно значительно шире раскрывает ваши возможности в выражении идей и задумов, я так считаю. Это мое любимое направление.

Какой совет вы дали бы женщинеам предпринимателям, чтобы поощрить их?

Меня многие спрашивают: С чего начать?, Посмотрите мои работы, их можно продавать? А какую стоимость поставить? Я боюсь, а вдруг не пойдет... В этом случае я советую прежде всего не боятся, а пробовать. Лучше один раз попробовать, чем вообще не пробовать и потом жалеть. В процессе работы вы набираетесь опыта, вы можете регулировать свои цены и чувствовать покупателя. Предсказать что-то заранее очень сложно, все познается только в работе, все индивидуально. Обязательно нужно заниматься тем, что вам по душе, иначе ваш магазин прератится в ежедневную рутину, которая будет вас тяготить. Нужно постоянно работать над вашим ассортиментом, вкусы покупателей меняются и вы должны это учитывать.

Kакой урок, исходя из того, что ты предприниматель, ты хотела бы получить в начале своего пути

В начале моего пути мне не хватало гибкости, то есть, раньше в основном я делала большие, сложные и трудозатратные работы, а для успешного ведения бизнеса нужно быть более разнообразным. Сейчас в моем магазине Larissa Zasadna вы можете найти как большие сложные работы, так и небольшие тематические: спорт, музыка, coffee art и т. д.

Каким вы видите ваш магазин Larissa Zasadna через 5+ лет?

Сейчас я об этом пока не думаю. Я просто наслаждаюсь своим творчеством каждый день (и ночь :) )

Есть ли что-то, о чем вы хотели бы поговорить, о чем мы не спрашивали?

Я хотела бы рассказать о своих проектах. Я сделала несколько логотипов для американских компаний, дизайн открыток для сети супермаркетов и предприятия, оформление благотворительного мероприятия в Нью Йорке, оформление кафе на Гаваях. Сейчас готов проект для оформление лаундж бара, но в связи с Covid19 он пока на паузе. Очень интересная тема иллюстраций детской литературы, надеюсь когда нибудь я получу такой заказ.
