By Michele of VAMICreations and Agnes of Aggies Quillings
Hi Everyone!
My name is Agnes Nanai. I’m from Hungary and I’m the owner of Aggies Quillings.
I met quilling 3 years ago. My very first piece wasn’t what I was expecting. I thought it’s going to be really easy to master this technique, when I watched videos on YouTube. It wasn’t… It really gave me a hard time. But I was determined and after a year, I was becoming better and better.
Before:
First I started with snowflakes. Still I think this is the best way to start, if you’re interested in quilling. You get to know all the tools you’ll need and you can practice the basic shapes.
After:
Everything you need for this, you can find on Amazon or eBay. You can try craft shops as well. I used to live in the UK and I loved Hobbycraft. My favorite online shop is pasttimesquilling.co.uk, I get all of my paper from them.
A few things you’ll definitely need as a start:
Workboard Pins
Tweezers
Slotted tools
Quilling paper, I would suggest 3mm wide
And the glue.. this is a tricky one. I would say at first you can use any paper glue that’s water based. Afterwards I’m sure you’ll try at least 4-5 different kinds, till you find the one, which is perfect for you. I use Hobby Craft’s Tacky Glue.
After 2 years I tried to do outlines. This was a really big step for me, it was completely different from what I have known so far. I had to start all over again. Watching videos like the below and trying and trying..
I found the Beehive Design on Instagram and Rebecca’s work had a big influence on me. I’m sure if someone is interested in quilling, they’ll meet her Quilling Unicorn sooner or later.
I still need a lot of practice, but I think I’ll get there :)
My next big project will be 3D quilling paper flower wreaths and floral pictures :) One of my favorite quilling artist is Anastasiya Bertova. I admire her work, she’s precise and simply amazing!
All together I would say, if anyone is interested in quilling, give it a go and don’t give up if your first piece doesn’t match your imagination. A lot of practice and patience and you’ll be able to do anything you ever dreamt about :)
